Workplace skin checks can help detect skin cancer early
A subtle change in the colour and texture of the skin near Alicia Taylor’s mouth didn’t ring alarm bells for her or her GP. Note: This post includes a post-treatment image (stitches) following skin cancer removal.
But our melanographer, Harriet Clayton, was concerned when she spotted the area during a workplace skin check at Aroona Farms in Robinvale.
She recommended Alicia investigate further, resulting in the diagnosis of a basal cell carcinoma (BCC) growing on and underneath her skin.
Basal cell carcinoma identified during a workplace skin check
While BCCs are not usually life-threatening, this one had been missed for some time because of its unusual presentation and by the time it was picked up by Mobile Screening Alicia required significant treatment, including surgery, 76 stitches and four weeks of radiation.
Late diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma required significant treatment
Less than a year after her initial diagnosis, Alicia is recovering and is relieved that her employer’s decision to arrange the workplace skin check, and Harriet’s skill and passion for her job, meant that her BCC was diagnosed when it was.
“I’m so thankful that you detected this … thank you to your team for the important service you provide to the community.”
Why workplace skin checks matter for employers and staff
Aroona Farms played a vital role in protecting the health of their staff – and Alicia in particular – when they proactively arranged skin checks.
