Our ears have tiny hair cells in the cochlea (inner ear) that convert sound vibrations into electrical signals for the brain. Exposure to loud noise can damage or destroy these cells. Unlike other cells in the body, hair cells don’t regenerate, so any loss is permanent.
Workers’ compensation claims can be costly and damage the reputation of employers. In nearly all states and territories in Australia it is mandatory that workers in noisy workplaces have their hearing tested (audiometric testing) within three months of starting work and then every two years.
