Since 1980, Mobile Screening has grown from a single mobile hearing testing service into one of Australia’s largest provider of onsite workplace health and occupational hygiene services. What began with a simple vision, making health testing more accessible, convenient, and reliable for employers, has evolved into a national operation delivering audiometry, noise assessments, skin checks, health assessments, drug and alcohol testing, fit testing, air quality monitoring and more. The timeline below highlights the key milestones, people, innovations and service expansions that have shaped our journey over the past four decades.

Mobile Screening is established in Victoria, Australia, when founders Chris Webb and John Herring launch one of the region’s first onsite workplace health testing services. The business specialises in workplace audiometry and noise assessments, with Chris as the primary tester. A caravan fitted with two sound-proof booths allows the team to deliver convenient, onsite hearing tests directly to workplaces.

Chris becomes the full owner of Mobile Screening, supported by his children, Toby and Lucy. Toby assists with data entry while Lucy uses a typewriter to write reports. Mobile Screening continues to grow as a trusted provider of workplace hearing and noise assessment services.

As demand increases, the caravan is replaced by two purpose-built trailers designed specifically for mobile workplace audiometry. Toby becomes a partner in the business, helping expand services across Victoria. Initially, noise assessments are outsourced, but by 2000 the service is brought in-house to enhance efficiency and align with Mobile Screening’s expanding workplace health testing offering.

After 36 years of dedicated operation, Chris and Toby transitioned Mobile Screening to new leadership - Chris retiring and Toby travelling Australia with his family. In 2016, the business entered a new chapter when current owner Simon Holt acquired Mobile Screening. An intuitive and attentive leader with experience in both the UK and Australia, Simon is known for his customer-first approach, energy and enthusiasm. Under his stewardship, the business has continued to grow nationally while staying true to its founding values: exceptional service, the best technology, flexibility and truly listening to clients. As Simon often reflects, “I am proud to steward an organisation where the foundation of success remains the same as it was 40 years ago.”

Mobile Screening continues to innovate, becoming the first in Australia to deliver audiometric screening from a fully self-contained, off-grid vehicle. These purpose-built units allow us to reach even the most remote parts of Australia with ease and reliability. Our onsite screening capability expands to includes spirometry.

To support national growth, Ben Wearne joins as General Manager, driving the expansion of both services and geographical coverage. The business navigates the challenges of COVID and quickly expands beyond Victoria, establishing a presence and reputation in NSW, QLD, SA and WA, strengthening its position as a comprehensive provider workplace health screening and environmental hygiene services. Toby has also returned to work for Mobile Screening, adding to the growing experience and expertise of the organisation.

Mobile Screening continues evolving to meet the rising demand for onsite health testing. Drug and alcohol screening is introduced, followed by skin cancer checks and air quality assessments in 2022. Fit testing and general workplace health checks are made available in 2024, with onsite light (lux) assessments added in 2025 to support safer, healthier workplaces.

Today, Mobile Screening employs staff across Australia and delivers onsite health testing to more than 4,500 workplace clients.
